In its seventh year, the Winter Breakout moves to Grand Rapids Catholic Central’s downtown gym (319 Sheldon Blvd SE, Grand Rapids, MI., 49503 on Saturday, December 8, 2019 for five games with defending Class B champion Benton Harbor, Class A runner up Holland West Ottawa, Class B runner up Grand Rapids Catholic Central, and numerous college prospects in each of the day’s five games.  Here’s the 2018 Winter Breakout preview:

All day passes are $10 and  for those stopping in to see one game just $5.

State Champs' Division Rankings and State Champs' Top 40 Players

1:00pm- Grand Rapids Union (0-1) vs. University Prep (2-1): “Fire and Ice” 6’1” senior guard Jovon Hernandez and 6’1” senior guard Jose Torres lead the Red Hawks.  New coach Brandon Barrett jump started Hazel Park over the past four years and he’s looking to do the same at “U-Prep” led by juniors  Jo’voen Coleman and Malcolm Cain as well as freshman Ashton Henderson.

2:30pm- Forest Hills Northern (2-0) vs. Grandville (2-2): Senior co-captains Trent Summerfield, Drew Moore, Brandon Matthews, and Caleb Gildner as well as sophomore Ethan Erickson have the Huskies off to a hot start.  Grandville bounced back Friday night to level their record and have a strong group of guards in seniors, Freddy Baker and Bryce Gamble, as well as one of the state’s top sophomore guards, TJ Barnes.

4:00pm- Benton Harbor (2-0, #1 Division 2) vs. Detroit Loyola (1-0, #6 Division 3): The Tigers are the defending state champions and led by the state’s #1 junior, Carlos “Scooby” Johnson as well as 6’7” senior big man Justin Brown who is off to a productive start this season.  Loyola, three seasons removed from a state semi-final run, has a strong core of guards led by senior Cam Hudson and junior point guard Mark Mayberry.

5:30pm- Mattawan (3-0) vs. Dansville (2-1, #3 Division 3):The Wildcats are led by Coastal Carolina commit, Dexter Shouse, and the state’s top senior post prospect, 6’10” Nolan Foster, who holds offers from Central Michigan, James Madison, Toledo, and Ferris State.  Dansville is led by Central Michigan commit and 4-year varsity player, Caleb Hodgson, and senior point guard, Hayden Voss, who is recruited by numerous MIAA and WHAC colleges.

7:00pm- Grand Rapids Catholic Central (0-0, #6 Division 2) vs. West Ottawa (1-1): Capping the 7th annual Winter Breakout, a battle of 2018 state runner ups, Catholic Central in Class B and the Panthers in Class A, should rock the house as both teams are still riding the wave.  The host Shamrocks don’t have the front court power of last season but they do return a strong core in senior point guard and future Grand Valley State Laker, Austin Braun, as well as two of Michigan’s top juniors, Devon Boyd and Mykel Bingham.  West Ottawa has one of the state’s top coaches, Steve Windemuller, and while a strong core of Panthers graduated, the system is in place with seniors Jason Fairfield and Tra'vion McDaniel as well as productive juniors Tanner Wiegerink and Blake Perderson looking to march back to the Breslin Center sooner than later.
